RADIO BASICS | WHAT MAKES A GOOD ON AIR PERSONALITY?

As part of my Radio Basics Series, I thought to share these comments from International members of a Linkedin group I belong to.

Hope you find enlightenment herein?

"First and foremost, a good On Air Radio Personality must be free while on air because this lets them do their thing naturally without forcing it.
Secondly, he/she should be creative. Some humor is also a good feature to have.

They should know a bit about radio production because this gives ability to produce various items to add onto their program lineup.

Those small additional productions give the listener an extra reason to stay hooked while also attracting more fresh audience. In the end, such a line of things pushes audience numbers up and this is something that can increase advertising revenue.

Must also understand their audience really well because that is the basis of creating a good program that meets their needs and therefore entertains them relevantly.

Should be good in programing and production with ability to conceive segment ideas that not only entertain but also bring in more revenue .

Should also have self control over their feelings such that they don't react badly to an annoying audience or bring their emotions on air."

"When all of us were getting into radio, we became students of the industry. We studied the stations, the personalities, and we learned how to take what they did and put our personality to it. We studied our audience, learned how to be relevant and important to their lives, just like those we studied. A great personality is a student of the industry. They will establish a human connection to the human listener. The personality learns how to super-serve the listener with local, compelling content and becomes an invaluable part of their lives."

"Even if you have  a unique voice, or you are articulate, and with all the local knowledge to hand, you need to have that certain something called the knack or talent, I'm sorry to say our industry is littered with talent less presenters . I'm sorry but you can't fool the audience all the time, again you need to have that spark of talent, in particular if you are a talk show host, then you need talent and an opinion about the problems of the day, and should not be afraid to tell the world your opinion, and as DON says in his comment this then becomes " compelling content"."

"A Great Personality with the Human Element. Passion... Finding the smallest line to make that great connection with the Listener. People will say "You have a great voice, you should be in radio" - I say - "You have great content, you should be in radio" - Thats the bread and butter baby. Love what you do, never throw away a break."

"To be a great On-Air talent, one should have the following three qualities:
1. A great work ethic - It's not just a 4 hour shift. Everyday it's planning, prep, phone calls, people and promotions. You gotta love it!
2. A sense of humor, about everything. Great personalities have THICK skins!
3. An open mind with a willingness to adapt to changes that WILL come (in the programming, in management, in the way the biz works...and etc.)

Having a great voice is just a lucky break. Personality is what brings audience to advertisers!"

THE TONY DOE RADIO SHOW (REBOOT)

Guess who's bizack with a brand new bag?

Dearly Beloved, after a considerable time spent in deep meditation, which included virtual trips to certain temples in high up mountains where I communed with creative monks, I have come up with the rebooted version of the Tony Doe Radio Show.

It is a break from what was initially created and my mentors insisted that if my plans are to make profit from all this expended energy, I would have to compromise my lecturer stance.

Hence, I’ve done away with the boring bits, shortened the show’s length and introduced recurring characters such as Ochuko (the mischievous Warri-born Naija Chipmunk) and Corporal Osahon (The rifle wielding scourge of the Highway Checkpoint).

The Tony Doe Radio Show (Reboot), is an audio collage of comic skits (or sketches) and music!

The primary aim is to tickle you, even if na small!

Drawing on my love for comic sketches and what some have said is my multiple personality disorder, I have recreated the Tony Doe Brand and this time, e must to be… * in the D’prince’s voice*

So my pipo, get ready for a hilarious ride!

It’s the craziest thing on radio & online!!!

WHY I MISS OLD SCHOOL TELEVISION

This note is inspired by 97.3 Classic FM’s Sly, who’s turned my Thursday Mornings into a retro trip of TV tunes and movie soundtracks, kinda like Childhood Wednesdays hosted by the incredibly gifted Chioma Okpala (and occasionally moi) back at City 105.1FM.

If you grew up in the 80s you’d share my pain and nostalgia. Nowadays, kids seem spoiled for choice with the array of shows on terrestrial and satellite Television… too much information yet not enough to remain memorable.

In my time, we anticipated… and that was sheer joy in itself. Not now when you have digital schedules and 6 hour block reruns! If you missed an episode of Voltron … sorry, on your own oh. Best believe your classmates will rub it in when retelling the show with plenty embellishment!

Television began at 4 o clock… after the long beep and colour bars which usually began around 3.30pm. You knew the kids came 1st as soon as the Duty Continuity Announcer reeled out the list of programmes to be transmitted for the day.

I’m tempted to say that kids these days don’t really enjoy themselves as much as I did!
I had choices too but was fed in doses that made every stage of my pre-teen memorable.
I made a cape out of Granny’s wrapper, sculpted paper watches and assumed the leadership role of G-Force’s Mark, of the Battle of the Planets fame.
*transmute*
This was long before Ben Ten’s Omnitrix even existed!

Voltron
Battle of the Planets and Voltron, helped me build my dedicated team of after-school playmates made up of the next door neighbour’s kids. As a team we came up with the most elaborate get out of trouble schemes. With one lie and four witnesses, the koboko was often kept at bay.

These kids these days *sigh* just snitch on each other over ice cream and promises of trips to the cinema!

I loved playing Natty (The New Masquerade), if the food in Zebrudaya’s (my neighbor) house was real, during our revised reruns!!!

I remember reenacting tales by moonlight… with morals in tow.
Battle Of The Planets

I wasn’t crazy about video games. I preferred the outdoors… catcher, police and thief, monkey post and a chance to steal a kiss while pretending it was a scene from yesterday’s Moonlighting episode.

The crush at the time get sense. Kiss ko, miss ni!

By the time SuperTed and the Ovide gang had taken over screen time, I was ready for boarding school and thus began the diminishing returns.

SuperTed
What I’m saying is, friendships were built on a strong foundation then and a common interest in TV shows. Somehow our sense of responsibility was built on what we watched. There was a moral obligation to build up our psyches and level of tolerance via suitably produced Television programs.

I’m still in touch with some of my childhood friends. Maybe not as much as back then, come on, we’ve grown up. But the memories stay fresh.

And I’m grateful to some people (like Sly) vested with the responsibility of reminding us of how good it used to be. Don’t get me wrong oh, there were awful memories too but as always the good ones outlive them bad ones!

FRESH OUT!!!

As e be say, some kain artistes nor dey gree me hear word again, i don dey compelled to feature true talents here on this blog...
check them out!

Smoke Entertainment recently announced the official release of Tosyno
formerly known as T-rex  (real name Oluwatosin Mokayi)'s promo track.

The ex-dreadlock, definitely killed it better than his fake CR7 skills on the football pitch!
Yeah, I said it. Sue me.

The track's titled Machine! and props go out to @JoeyPlus for a dope beat!

Another wan wey wayward go, na my small broda Freelance with this track called “Give It To Me”  featuring BigBoyz Akademy Records mate RayDee. Definitely a club banger!!!

DEAR UNCLE ARSENE...

Dear Uncle Arsene...

Arsene Wenger
The last time we had a chat was around September of 2011. In your usual dismissive manner, you ignored my tantrums. I figured you had a lot on your mind and maybe even thought for once that your job was on the line.

Alas my positions where false. You turned out to be comfortable with the board and in your assumption, the players too. There was money in the bank, no fears of going bankrupt.

However you succeeded as a financial consultant and failed as a trophy winning coach. Your gamble with top player sales, proved successful for the other clubs. We couldn’t break even with half as good players who were bought to replace those sold.

And again, we are selling and haven’t exactly figured out if we’re buying or not.

E go pain me if that dada go win laurels for Roma!

We have even incurred the wrath of a seaside coach, who labeled us classless!

Rodgers … take time o!

Imagine, Arsenal classless? Who knows class better than Le Professeur?
So apart from the cute away jersey which will look good with my fading blue jeans, I really  am not looking forward to this season… and already the taunts have begun especially with the Banshee of The Emirates, Didier Drogba, doing what he did again during the Emirates cup. For his age (real age… *ssshhhhh!*), he still has amazing agility!

Uncle Arsene, for the sake of the fans, the club image and cup winning possibilities, buy Suarez na! No be about 70million pounds we get to spend? Why we dey stingy like this na?

This is a club that was once generous in dishing out defeats to those who dared question our ammunition!

I wanted to believe that buying a world class striker would be detrimental to the overall team spirit… but going by what I’ve seen with these friendlies… *sigh*

Uncle, I take God beg you na, remove shame from our faces, do not let our enemies (opponents) get the best of us this season. Do the right thing, in this case the unstubborn thing.

I go still dey committed sha, but my support go be whisper.

Meanwhile, try send those things (paraphernalia) wey I ask for.

It’s been over two years and I’ve been married since then!

Your nephew…

Tony Doe

RANDOM: ME,TEMI DOLLFACE, BEZ, CLASSIC973!

I know it’s been a minute since I put up a podcast and I apologize. Things have been interesting to say the least in the last few weeks.

E remain small I for don turn that corporate nuisance beggar begin appeal for support from some kain pesins wey no know say this thing na work sha!

So while I’m not ready to put out fresh episodes until I have twisted the arms of my sponsors, I do hope I can still keep the blog interesting.

And yes, I do hope to as well, have your reactions (mostly positive) to the radio story series I shared…

I’m thinking of turning it into a fiction piece.

How you see am?

Meanwhile in other news… *Olamide’s voice* …

…ON TEMI DOLLFACE!
Now, for those with the good sense to follow me on Twitter abeg make una increase small na, you’ll know I have an undisguisable (is it even a word?) crush on Temi Dollface (@TemiDollface). Yes, a massive one on the Tiwa Savage scale I used to have. But I think this will last longer. Have you seen the Pata Pata video? She co-directed it but it’s the jam really that gets me (produced by that bast*** Ikon!)! It’s what radio needs and should sustain compared to the raunchy senseless gibberish most artistes put out now and which some radio stations don’t find awkward playing in the early hours!
Thankfully, I also follow the DollFace (who reminds me a lot of Eryka Badu) on twitter  (@TemiDollface) and I’m working on an interview with her pretty soon!
Meanwhile check out the Pata Pata video!

... ON BEZ
I also recently checked out Bez’s video for “SAY”, directed by the gifted and lovely Kemi Adetiba.
It was well located (who doesn’t like New York). I liked Bez’s big boy swag, the leading lady (Ify Jones) did her bit too… the song was Rich!
There was a bit about tissue paper in the fan in the early shots! (I actually read a reaction to that on twitter).
The end was the perfect twist and there was no to be continued phrase even though the surprise conclusion begged for it.
Shouts out to Kemi and Bez!

See Video:

... ON CLASSIC FM 97.3
I haven’t been as committed to my radio as much anymore… maybe I’ve grown out of a desire to scan every dial, looking to chastise!
However, I’d like to thank Classic 97.3FM & its crew for encouraging pleasant retro feelings and staying true to the philosophy (every song you know), making it sound fresh every single time.

Got some feel good old school in you? Try Classic fm!

GIDI UP!
I’m usually late to the party. But when I do get there, I make an entrance!
I’m a fan of the Web Series on NdaniTV called, GIdiUp! And even more so, because I can relate to the urban story of each young cast member (and again Temi Dollface killed the live set in one of the episodes).
I look forward to lengthier and evolving stories to come!

It currently has 8 sweet & short episodes online.

Check out episode 1 (you can find the synopsis and others on youtube)

So there, I promise to get back to fun filled informative entertainment podcasts real soon!

Donations are welcome sha!

Cheers!

RADIO - FRIEND OR FIEND? by Corey Deitz

Hi, Guys... thought  I should share this hilarious  bit from one of my favourite Radio  people, Mr Corey Deitz!

Enjoy!

Your radio: friend or fiend? The conventional wisdom is radio (the service) and radios (the electronic gadget) are generally, 99% friend.
It's that other 1% of the time which betrays radio as something of an instigator and occasionally, a weapon.
Yes, I said your radio. But, before I lay out a more complete case let me tell you about a recent incident that occurred in Florida.
Witness the recent story out of Palm Beach County Josue Rodriquez was taking a shower the other morning when his roommate changed the radio dial. Normally, this would not be an issue. Normally, a person might respond by saying something like, "Hey: I was listening to that. Why didya' turn the dial?"
Normally.
But, Mr. Rodriquez responded abnormally. OR did the RADIO instigate something?
Rodriquez jumped out of the shower - probably looking like Geraldo Rivera in a tweeted selfie - and confronted his roommate over the action. Rodriquez invaded his roommate's personal space to badly, the dial-changer shoved him away.
Rodriquez chose to escalate the confrontation by grabbing a machete and trying to slice up his roommate, who successfully ducked and saved himself from possibly being shredded though was conked on the cheek and bled a bit.
Both men wound up on the floor wrestling each other until the roommate was able to make an escape and call 911. The cops showed up and Rodriquez was arrested.
You may think this situation is unique. And it is to a point. But, I can readily point out that radio and radios have both been at the center of situations where very bad things have occurred.
I wrote an article called "10 Bizarre Ways Radio Can Kill You Suddenly - Freak Accidents and Dumb Deeds Lead to Death" (which you can read online) where I chronicled. Just look at some of these awful circumstances:
"...Three members of a family who were electrocuted by 13,000 volts while trying to erect a radio antenna..."
"...A woman who competed in a radio station's contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication..."
"...Two brothers have been found guilty of murdering a father-of-two after they tried to steal a radio from his car..."
"...a man was killed by his car radio during a late-night crash…the truck's radio flew out of it's housing and hit [Mr.] Cates in the head..."
"...a truck driver...plowed into another car and killed the driver and passenger…because he was trying to tune his radio to the news..."
"...A late-night radio talk show host spoke of his shock after a listener died on air during a phone-in..."
There are more. I would suggest you read the previous article I've noted if for no other reason than to familiarize yourself with the darker side of radio and radios.
Having said that, I don't want to cause any unnecessary concern. But, a little paranoia never hurt.
As far as Mr. Rodriquez is concerned, I would suggest that he be kept away from radios more than machetes. He seems completely comfortable with blades and somewhat less comfortable with sharing a radio.
Then again, the fact that a man would be so enamored with the audio from a radio station speaks quite highly of whatever station or radio personality he was listening to at the time. Yet that information was not reported and we will never know which radio station is so damn good, a man will try to kill his roommate just to hear it.
What a shame.

MY TOP 5 NAIJA MUSIC VIDEOS ATM (AT THE MOMENT)

DISCLAIMER: This is in no particular order and the list is not a collation of fan votes via sms or other social media platforms. It is a collation based on the discretion of the Author of the Blog who is entitled to his informed opinion.

But una must gree with me sha!

*shiningteeth*

Let us begin at number 5, shall we:

5.       BURNA BOY – RUN MY RACE
The video pays symbolic allegiance to the bedrock of Afrobeat (The African Shrine) and highlights its night time activities and patrons. Clarence Peters did justice to the vision of an artiste who respects his creative roots and returns to the grounds where such spiritual inspiration may have come from.

4.       CHIDINMA – EMI NI BALLER (FEAT. SUSPEKT & OGA BOSS)
Yes, I said Oga Boss as opposed to Illbliss. You’ve got to respect the hustle! Video was shot again by the Capital Hill Maestro, Clarence. Great color, Chidinma looks cute as ever, Suspect forever portrays the Ipodo logo and Illbliss… now that’s a dapper don!!!

3.       FLAVOUR – ADA ADA
What can I say? I’m a sucker for images of a Nigerian Customary Wedding, in this case an Igbo one. The song itself will be in the annals of great indigenous wedding songs (move over Sunny Neji’s Oruka). I’m compiling a playlist now sef…
By the way, excellent video. Enough said.

2. P-SQUARE – PERSONALLY
Questionable lyrics aside… (na deir their trademark if you haven’t noticed), this is a world class video which even caught the attention of egbon Jermaine Jackson.
The choreography was outstanding, the costumes on point, the girls sizzling hot! And even the comic relief provided by Pawpaw didn’t miss the mark.
Now, as for that gravity defying lean… make una show me the making so I go see the rope wey hol’ una!
Jude Engees again behind the lenses!

      1. TEMI DOLLFACE – PATA PATA

1st of all I don admit say I get crush on the chic. Yes, I’m still married too and my wife laughs hard at my fake azonto when this song comes on. Picture quality topnotch, song is a breath of fresh air with its various fusions (Ikon, you’re a fool for this one). And Temi hot na, kinda sweet girl next door with a dark sensual secret type of hot. And even if my wife reads this, nothing dey happen.

You can say it, I don mad pata pata.

There you have it, Tony Doe’s top 5 Naija Music videos ATM (At The Moment).

See you next time!
